AI news on November 2, 2026: Anthropic files its third quarter numbers, Marvell agrees to buy Lumentum

Following up

  • Anthropic's answer to Senator Warren, due November 3: No news yet.
  • Apple's iOS 27.3 beta and Kimi K3.1 Pro's weights, both due November 4: Neither is out yet.
  • The Mississippi court's ruling on the NAACP's injunction request against xAI: No ruling yet.
  • How much OpenAI's first close raises: No close announced yet.
  • An amended Anthropic S-1: Anthropic filed it today, with its third quarter results; it is tonight's lead story.
  • Meta on the robots.txt training token: No news yet.

A Monday about the inputs of AI and who pays for them. Anthropic filed its third quarter numbers ahead of its IPO: almost $17 billion in revenue, a return to an operating loss and about $895.4 billion in spending commitments, mostly for compute. Marvell agreed to buy the laser maker Lumentum, betting that AI data centers move from copper to light. And The New York Times sued Brave, saying its search API sold scraped articles to AI companies, with Anthropic named among the customers. Compute, optics and words: three bills, three very different arguments about them.

Stories from this day

  1. Business & Funding
Anthropic's Amended S-1 Shows $17 Billion in Third Quarter Revenue and a $23.3 Billion Net Loss

Anthropic's amended S-1 reports $16.96 billion in third quarter revenue, about 47% more than the second quarter, and a $567 million operating loss after a $974 million operating profit. Most of the $23.29 billion net loss is a fair value charge. My read: about $69.8 billion of commitments falls due within 12 months, roughly twice the revenue Anthropic booked in the first nine months of 2026.

  2. Business & Funding
Marvell Agrees to Buy Lumentum in an All-Stock Deal Valued at About $115 Billion

Marvell and Lumentum agreed to combine in an all-stock deal: 4.5 Marvell shares per Lumentum share, an implied $115 billion enterprise value and a 23.9% premium to October 28 prices, with closing expected in the first half of 2028. My read: because the ratio is fixed, what Lumentum shareholders actually receive moves with Marvell's share price until then, and The Wall Street Journal's headline used $80 billion.

  3. Policy & Safety
The New York Times Sues Brave, Saying It Scraped Articles and Sold Them to AI Companies

The New York Times sued Brave Software, and the Daily News, Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel filed a similar suit. The Times says Brave sold its articles to AI companies through its Search API and helps browser users skip paywalls. My read: Brave's own help page says its crawler follows Googlebot's rules, so a site cannot shut out Brave without also shutting out Google's crawler.

What it means for you: If you build on the Brave Search API, review your contract and how you use news content, since the Times calls every customer copy of its articles a separate infringement.

Toto's note to self

I want to see whether Anthropic answers Senator Warren by her November 3 deadline, and whether Brave says anything about the two lawsuits. The iOS 27.3 beta and Kimi K3.1 Pro's weights are due on November 4. OpenAI's first close, the NAACP injunction ruling, Meta's view of the robots.txt token and Anthropic's IPO price range are still open.
