OpenAI Updates ChatGPT's Chrome Extension to Read and Act on Your Open Tabs

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI updated the ChatGPT extension for Chrome on October 15, 2026: in Chat mode ChatGPT can gather information across open tabs, and in Work mode it can control tabs to send messages, fill out forms, download files and group tabs.
  • ChatGPT asks before it uses each new website, before it reads browser history and before it downloads or uploads files, although the extension requests broad Chrome permissions at install, including reading and changing data on all websites.
  • The ChatGPT extension works on every ChatGPT plan, according to The Decoder and Engadget, while Google keeps its comparable Chrome auto browse feature for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.
  • The update arrives about two months after OpenAI retired ChatGPT Atlas, its own browser, on August 9, 2026.

OpenAI on October 15, 2026 updated the ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome so that ChatGPT can read the tabs a user has open and, in its Work mode, act on them by sending messages, filling out forms or downloading files. The extension works on every ChatGPT plan, according to The Decoder and Engadget.

The update follows OpenAI's decision to give up its own browser: the company announced on July 9, 2026 that it would retire ChatGPT Atlas, launched less than a year earlier, and set August 9 as the deprecation date (The Verge). Instead of asking people to switch browsers, OpenAI is now putting ChatGPT's agent into Chrome and other browsers people already use, much as it brought ChatGPT into Microsoft Word on September 17, 2026, one of several AI products it now runs inside other companies' software.

What can ChatGPT now do with Chrome tabs?

ChatGPT can now use open Chrome tabs as context in Chat mode and control them in Work mode, OpenAI said in a post on X on October 15, 2026. In Chat it can "look across your open tabs and gather info," and in Work it can send messages, fill out forms, download files, and organize and group tabs.

Users point ChatGPT at their browser by mentioning @chrome in a prompt (The Decoder). OpenAI's sample tasks include comparing three couches open in separate tabs by dimensions, material, delivery time and return policy, copying vendors from several tabs into a comparison sheet with prices and source links, and using an event brief to fill out a registration form while stopping before submitting it.

The ChatGPT panel that opens beside a web page, which OpenAI calls side chat, also got an upgrade. It now carries the user's entire ChatGPT history and lets them switch between Chat and Work without leaving the site, OpenAI said on X. OpenAI's documentation adds that users can highlight text on a page or right-click to Ask ChatGPT, and ask about a YouTube video when captions are available.

How do permissions and privacy controls work?

By default, ChatGPT asks before it interacts with each new website, and the user can allow it once, allow it for that site, allow it for all sites or decline, according to OpenAI's documentation. OpenAI marks the all sites option as elevated risk because ChatGPT then stops asking.

Browser history gets a stricter rule. ChatGPT asks each time it wants to use history, scopes access to the request, and offers no always allow option, OpenAI says. The Chrome Web Store listing adds that ChatGPT always asks before downloading or uploading files. Allowed and blocked sites are managed in Settings, Computer Use in the ChatGPT desktop app, and the lists are shared across supported browsers.

The extension itself asks Chrome for wide access at install. OpenAI lists permissions such as reading and changing all data on all websites, reading and changing browsing history on all signed in devices, managing downloads, and access to the page debugger. The company also warns users to treat page content as untrusted, because malicious text on a page can push an agent to copy data somewhere unintended, an attack known as prompt injection.

How does it compare with Gemini in Chrome?

As of October 2026, the main difference is who gets the agent: OpenAI offers the ChatGPT extension on all plans, while Google keeps Chrome's auto browse feature for paying Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. The Verge compared the new Work controls to auto browse, which Google introduced on January 28, 2026 in preview for those subscribers in the US.

Google has widened auto browse since then, most recently to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in India on October 7, 2026, but has kept it tied to its paid tiers. Gemini in Chrome is built into the browser, while ChatGPT arrives as an extension that also runs in other browsers. Google is pushing agents into office work on other fronts too, with the Gemini agent it announced on October 8, 2026.

Who can use the updated extension?

The updated extension is available now from the Chrome Web Store, which shows an update dated October 15, 2026, and OpenAI's thread told users to download it to get started. Setup runs through Settings, Computer Use in the ChatGPT desktop app, where users install the extension and confirm the browser connection, according to OpenAI's documentation.

OpenAI says browser availability can depend on rollout and on workspace settings. When Work launched in July, free accounts could try it in the desktop app, while Plus and Pro subscribers could also use it on the web (Engadget).

What we don't know yet

  • Whether the tab features are available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK, regions OpenAI excluded from some recent agent launches such as Pro access to dots on September 29, 2026.
  • What usage limits apply to tab control in Work on each plan, including Free.
  • How well the extension resists prompt injection in practice, beyond OpenAI's own warnings.
  • Whether Business and Enterprise workspaces get the new tab control on by default.

FAQ

Does the extension work in browsers other than Chrome?

Yes. Since August 31, 2026 the ChatGPT browser extension also supports Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi, according to OpenAI's release notes. Opera supports tab mentions and browser control but not the side chat panel.

What is the difference between Chat and Work in ChatGPT?

Chat is the regular conversation mode. Work is the agent OpenAI launched on July 9, 2026 for longer, multi step tasks across apps and websites, according to Engadget, and it is the mode that can control browser tabs.

Does OpenAI keep a record of what ChatGPT does in the browser?

OpenAI says it does not store a separate complete record of browser actions from the extension. It stores browser activity only when it becomes part of a chat, such as page text ChatGPT reads, screenshots, tool calls and summaries, and the user's normal ChatGPT data controls apply to that content.

How many people use the ChatGPT Chrome extension?

The Chrome Web Store listed the extension with 7,000,000 users on October 16, 2026, one day after the update. That figure covers the extension as a whole, not the new tab features.
