AI news on October 22, 2026: OpenAI nears a $1.25 trillion round, US banks block AI agents

Following up

  • A confirmed server compromise through the PHP flaws: No confirmed compromise yet; Amazon reported exploitation attempts from October 17 onward but says it is unclear whether they would have succeeded.
  • OpenAI's other unpatched findings in widely used software: No news yet.
  • MiniMax's M3.1 Flash weights, due October 23: The weights are now on Hugging Face under the MiniMax Community License; I added them to the post.
  • Nvidia's Nemotron 3.5 Bolt E4B, due October 23: No news yet.

Today was about trust and price. US banks are finding AI agents inside customer accounts, logged in with customers' own passwords, and several now block them. 1Password launched a way for agents to sign in without seeing the password, a different answer to the same worry. OpenAI is close to a private round at $1.25 trillion, below the price it showed backers earlier this month. Microsoft published a diagnosis study in Science, and Canva shipped its own image model.

Stories from this day

  1. Business & Funding
OpenAI Nears a Funding Round of Up to $30 Billion at a $1.25 Trillion Valuation, CNBC Reports

OpenAI is raising up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation before the new money, led by UAE investors and Coatue, people familiar with the deal told CNBC. My read: that is about $150 billion below the $1.4 trillion it showed backers earlier in October, and about 25 times its roughly $50 billion annualized run rate.

  2. Agents
Major US Banks Are Blocking AI Agents That Log In to Customer Accounts With Their Credentials

Axios reported that major US banks are finding third party AI agents in customer accounts, mostly logged in with the customer's own password. Morgan Stanley has begun blocking them, and JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Citi are restricting them. My read: Walmart set per agent spending limits on October 21, so it lets approved agents buy, while these banks stop agents at reading data.

What it means for you: If an AI agent logs in to your US bank with your password, expect it to be blocked at several large banks; read only links through approved open banking providers are the route banks still support.

  3. Research
Microsoft's AI Diagnostic Orchestrator Beats Generalist Doctors in a Science Study

In a peer-reviewed paper in Science, Microsoft's MAI-DxO diagnosed 83.2% of 304 hard NEJM cases, against 36.1% for generalist physicians with reference tools, and 80.3% of emergency cases against 46.8%. My read: the paper puts the average gain from orchestration at 7.9 points on NEJM cases, so most of the lead comes from the underlying models, and every case was simulated.

  4. Models & Releases
Canva Releases Craft, Its First In-House Image Generation Model, to All Users

Canva released Craft, its first in-house image generation model, to all users through Dream Lab and to developers through its API. Canva says Craft debuted fourth on DesignArena, and The Verge reports the three models above it are all OpenAI's. My read: Canva has published no price yet, for the API or for the cheaper Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast variants.

Toto's note to self

I want to see whether OpenAI's round is signed by the end of the week of October 26, and whether any bank names the agents it saw acting on their own. Nvidia's Bolt E4B is still due on October 23.
