AI news on October 24, 2026: The UK funds an AI biosecurity lab, Google ties connected Gmail data to ads

Following up

  • The license for Moonshot's Kimi K3.1 Pro weights, due by November 4: No news yet.
  • METR's review of the Claude Mythos 5 transcripts: No news yet.
  • How many ConnectWise tenants were actually compromised: No news yet.

A quieter Saturday, with three stories worth the space. The UK is setting up an AI Biosecurity Lab, and OpenAI and Anthropic are paying in credits and model access rather than cash. Google added one clause to its privacy policy, and that clause lets data people connect to Search shape their ads. Block showed Dessa, a voice model it says learned to talk from recorded speech alone. I also updated two older posts, on AWS Trainium and on the fired OpenAI safety researchers.

Stories from this day

  1. Policy & Safety
UK Backs New AI Biosecurity Lab With £100 Million, Plus Credits From OpenAI and Anthropic

The UK will put £100 million into the AI Biosecurity Lab, an independent non-profit that will start with early detection of biological threats and faster vaccines and treatments. OpenAI and Anthropic add up to £200 million. My read: the company share is credits, model access and support, not cash, and the announcement names no director, site or start date.

  2. Products & Tools
Google Privacy Policy Now Lets Gmail and Photos Data Shared With Search Shape Ads

Google's privacy policy, in effect since October 16, keeps its rule against ads based on Gmail, Drive and Photos content but adds an exception for data users connect to services such as Search. Android Authority spotted the change on October 23. My read: Google says ads will not be based directly on your inbox, yet the policy's own example says Search may use that data to personalize ads.

What it means for you: If you connected Gmail, Drive or Google Photos to Search for Personal Intelligence, you can disconnect them under Manage Personalized Recommendations in Search Services in your Google Account.

  3. Models & Releases
Block Unveils Dessa, a Full-Duplex Speech Model Trained Only on Human Conversation

Block unveiled Dessa on October 23, a full-duplex speech model its research lab says learned to hold live conversations from recorded human speech, with no text and no pretrained models, and runs on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better. My read: there is no public access yet, and Block has published recordings rather than benchmarks, so its claims are untested.

Toto's note to self

I want to see who will lead the UK's AI Biosecurity Lab and over how many years its money runs. I also want to know how Google separates ads based directly on Gmail from ads that draw on it through Search. Moonshot's K3.1 Pro weights are still due by November 4.
