Crusoe Sells Its Wyoming Data Center Site to Google, Which Plans a $17 Billion Campus
Crusoe said on November 6, 2026 that Google has acquired its data center site in southeast Wyoming, a day after Google announced a $17 billion investment in its first Wyoming data center. Neither company disclosed the price.
Key takeaways
- Crusoe said on November 6, 2026 that Google has acquired its unfinished data center site in southeast Wyoming, ending Crusoe's role in site selection, permits and power planning; the price was not disclosed.
- Google announced on November 5, 2026 that it will invest $17 billion in its first Wyoming data center in Laramie County, built around a 702 megawatt natural gas fuel cell plant with carbon capture.
- Bloomberg reported in June 2026 that Crusoe was being pushed aside on the project after failing to sign customers, with Google raising concerns about cost and timing (via The Next Web).
- Crusoe still works with Google: it is the developer of a Google data center campus under construction in Armstrong County, Texas, near Amarillo.
Crusoe said on November 6, 2026 that Google has acquired its unfinished data center site in southeast Wyoming, ending Crusoe's work on the project. The sale came a day after Google announced it would invest $17 billion in its first Wyoming data center, and neither company disclosed what Google paid.
Crusoe, a Denver-based developer valued at $30.9 billion in September, had worked on the site since 2025. TechCrunch called the project troubled: Crusoe had tried and failed to sign Google as a customer, and Google is now taking over development itself. It is the latest sign that money is not the only constraint on AI data center buildouts, which also depend on equipment, power and local support.
What did Crusoe and Google announce?
Crusoe said in a November 6, 2026 release that Google has acquired its site in southeast Wyoming, which it described as the completion of its pre-development work: choosing the site, winning government approvals and planning the power supply.
Crusoe presents the exit as a finished job rather than a setback. Chase Lochmiller, Crusoe's co-founder and CEO, said its "origination, entitlement, and de-risking" work had set the project up for construction and operation, and that Crusoe has more than 6 gigawatts contracted and over 40 gigawatts in its pipeline.
Google's side came first. In a November 5 blog post, Google said it is making a long-term, $17 billion investment in its first Wyoming data center, in Laramie County, with partners Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, American Electric Power (AEP) and Related Digital. Crusoe is not among the partners Google lists.
Why did Crusoe give up the Wyoming project?
Neither company has given a reason, but Crusoe was being pushed aside on the project in June 2026 after failing to sign customers, with Google raising concerns about costs and timing (Bloomberg via The Next Web). TechCrunch described the concerns as being about cost and construction timeline under Crusoe's management.
Crusoe and Tallgrass, an energy infrastructure company backed by Blackstone, announced the project on July 24, 2025. Their original release described a 1.8 gigawatt campus designed to scale to 10 gigawatts, running on natural gas and future renewable energy, next to Tallgrass's carbon dioxide storage hub. The June report did not slow Crusoe's fundraising: it raised $3.9 billion in September at that $30.9 billion valuation, according to TechCrunch.
How will Google power the campus?
Google said the project is contracted with AEP for a 702 megawatt fuel cell plant, which The Next Web describes as its main power source; fuel cells convert natural gas into electricity through an electrochemical reaction instead of burning it, and Bloom Energy will make them. Google calls it the largest planned development of its kind and says a large majority of its carbon emissions will be captured and stored at Tallgrass's nearby Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub, without giving a percentage.
Google will also buy power from gas generators run by Tallgrass and Black Hills Energy, and is studying whether carbon capture can be fitted to Tallgrass's combined cycle turbines. AEP plans to spend about $4 billion on the fuel cell plant, which should be fully running by the end of 2028, and Google will buy its output under a 20 year deal (POWER Magazine via The Next Web). Google says the data center will be air cooled to limit water use.
Set side by side, the two announcements describe the same site in different terms. Crusoe led with a capacity figure in 2025; Google's announcement leads with a dollar figure and names no total capacity for the campus.
| Crusoe and Tallgrass, July 24, 2025 | Google, November 5, 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | Crusoe, with Tallgrass | Google, with Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, AEP and Related Digital |
| Size | 1.8 GW, designed to scale to 10 GW | No campus capacity given; $17 billion long-term investment |
| Power | Several sources fueled by natural gas, plus future renewables | 702 MW AEP fuel cell plant (Bloom Energy), plus Tallgrass and Black Hills gas generators |
| Carbon | Long-term carbon capture via Tallgrass's sequestration hub | Capture of "a large majority" of fuel cell emissions at the Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub |
| Cooling | Not stated | Air cooled |
Is Crusoe still working with Google?
Yes: Crusoe said on September 28, 2026 that it is the developer of Google's data center campus under construction in Armstrong County, Texas, outside Amarillo, and it pointed to that project again in its Wyoming release. Crusoe says construction there began in June 2025, with a direct connection to an adjacent wind farm.
That leaves Google using Crusoe as a builder in Texas while taking the Wyoming site in house.
What does the deal say about local opposition?
Google's post gives much of its length to the community. It says it met more than 200 Laramie County residents at a meeting in downtown Cheyenne, expects the project to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in property taxes for the county and its School District 1, and will pay for all the power it uses. It and its partners are setting up a community council on how data center growth affects Cheyenne.
The announcement came two days after US voters sided against data centers in 40 of 41 local ballot measures on November 3, 2026, by CNBC's count. In July 2026, Cheyenne halted some data center water discharges after a Meta contractor released a rare bacterium into its wastewater reuse system, The Next Web reported.
What we don't know yet
- What Google paid Crusoe for the site, and whether Tallgrass was part of the transaction.
- What total power capacity Google plans for the campus, compared with the 1.8 gigawatts Crusoe and Tallgrass announced.
- Which company will manage construction, and what role Related Digital plays.
- When the first building will open.
FAQ
What is Crusoe?
Crusoe is a Denver-based AI infrastructure company that started as a cryptocurrency mining business running on natural gas that would otherwise have been burned off. It leases data center space, rents out its own GPUs and sells inference, the computing used to run AI models, according to TechCrunch.
Where exactly is the Wyoming data center?
Google places it in Laramie County, the county that includes Cheyenne, and The Next Web describes the campus as near Cheyenne. Crusoe and Tallgrass described the site in 2025 only as southeast Wyoming.
Who are Crusoe's other big customers?
TechCrunch says Crusoe is building its Abilene, Texas campus in phases for Oracle and OpenAI and a separate 900 megawatt campus next door for Microsoft, with the first building expected in mid-2027. Meta is also a customer, and Bloomberg reported a $13 billion, five-year cloud deal with the trading firm Jane Street (via TechCrunch).
